Ok so I apologize for the bad pun that I called my title,,, But today I harvested so many different types of food within the lettuce category and it was so interesting! I am actually not familiar with growing lettuce and did not really even know most of the varieties that the Howdy Farm grew. First of all, the lettuce field is probably one of my favorite fields out on the farm. At a quick glance all the heads of lettuce look like little swirls of green frosting coming out of the soil! Today we harvested arugula, which is on the far left of the picture. Arugula comes in the mixed greens salad boxes in the store and are the long and big leaves that smell really strong and almost spicy. We also harvested butter head lettuce, which is on the far right of the picture. This is very similar looking to iceberg lettuce, but it has a smoother and greener feel to it. Lastly we gathered the Napa cabbage, purple leaf lettuce, and radishes. After harvesting everything, it is important to wash all the produce extremely well to cleanse it of all the dirt. To increase the chance of each head being purchased, we also pulled off the outer layer of leaves so customers could see the pretty leaves hiding underneath. The whole process took a while, and there was a good amount of lettuce wasted simply because consumers want their produce to look pretty and not look like they came straight out of the ground. I strongly dislike seeing food go to waste, especially if it is perfectly good food, so it is safe to say that in the future I will leave the lettuce growing to the lettuce farmers! Have a good week, y'all!
