Reasons why spiders are great (for plants/farms at least):
Spiders are generally a sign of good luck in many cultures around the world.
Having spiders around is a sign that about 2,000 fewer bugs per spider will be around every year.
Spiders eat more insects than birds and are better at pest control because they can eat the super small bugs bigger animals miss.
Spiders especially like eating the bugs that love to damage plants.
The other day I was just sitting around on the farm, minding my own business, when all of a sudden I felt something on my arm. I thought to myself "uhm that's strange" and swiped at where I had felt something. I then felt something land on my leg, lo and behold it was this huge hairy black spider!!! I may or may not have screamed and jumped up fleeing the scene. It was terrifying!! I'm use to seeing the little brown spiders around but I am NOT use to big black hairy spiders at all. And I am NOT okay with one of them crawling all over me, it was so scary! It took me at least 5 minutes for me to compose myself after such a traumatizing experience. I mean look at this spider!!! It's huge, black, and hairy!! What a terrifying looking spider!! After this whole situation settled down I went and told Corey about what had happened, of course with him being such a tough farm guy he simply said "spiders are good for the farm." And that was that.
Although I was highly traumatized from this, I took it as a learning experience and decided to do some research as to why spiders are good for plants and farm life. Fun facts about spiders as seen to the left.
Not going to lie, this research made me very squeamish with all the pictures of spiders I came across but hey, spiders are helpful. They're good for the farm so I guess they're alright with me, now if only they wouldn't crawl on me then they'd be even better....
